Graeme Gilbert loves going to work. Besides family, radio is
Graeme’s
passion. The former Good Guy disc
jockey is today,
the undisputed
King of night time Talkback radio.
Graeme left school to pursue his radio dream (finishing schooling
on a Friday,
on-air at 2HD Newcastle, on the Monday).
“Back then it was rock’ n’ roll Top-40. Great times, great tunes
and, now, great
memories”.
Apart from a period of compulsory National Service, the Media
has been Graeme's
career.
And – has there been change?
“When I kicked off we played music off 45s, 33s and (occasionally)
78s.
Commercials came from reel-to-reel, disc and cart. Today the
music’s off CD or
computer."
Over the years I’ve set up Newsrooms that operated from
teleprinter, scripts
written on typewriters, with audio from cart.
Today those newsrooms are
paperless and Newsboss.
As for Talkback, I’ve come from tape-loop to digital”.
Along with radio, Graeme has written newspaper columns, done
‘countless’
television commercials, acted in a number of TV shows
and a couple of Aussie
films.
The winner of a number of Awards for broadcast journalism,
Graeme has reported
from Federal Parliament, called rugby league
games and Olympic games.
“But, he says, Talk Tonight is the top gig”. Five hours of talkback,
five nights
a week, can be like five, grueling marathons.
The show has no boundaries; “if it’s important to you,
it’s important to us”.
